Learning from our experience in the last distribution, we came better prepare to divide and conquer our mission at Thye Hua Kwan Senior Activity Centre (Toa Payoh). It was almost like meeting an old friend after accompanying the seniors to the telephone shops one week ago. Special thanks to the centre for having us and to the volunteers who cleared their busy schedule to be with us.

We completed our first distribution and workshop today at Kreta Ayer Senior Activity Centre (Jalan Kukoh). We had channel 8 filming our process as well. Seniors staying in the area came down to the centre to collect and understand how to use their new phones. We did a couple of home visits to bring the phones to the seniors who are homebound and unable to make their way to the centre. As this was our first time, there were quite a number of hiccups. Special thanks to the centre for accomodating us and for the volunteers who spent their afternoon with us, some struggling to communicate with the seniors but tried nonetheless. While collection continues this week, we spent two afternoons bringing the seniors to the telephone shops to get their SIM cards checked and changed. Prior to this visit, we went down to the centres to identify the people who required the service. Challenges faced: When we checked with the telcos, they mentioned that the seniors have to go down personally to change their SIM cards. All 2G cards had to be changed with a fee for some of the telcos. As only certain stores had the service, we identified the telcos in Bugis Junction as the place we will visit. For M1, we were redirected to Paragon. Fortunately the change fee was waived by the time we brought the seniors there. 10 seniors managed to upgrade their phones with a minimal change fee with Singtel. We spent the last week collection phones in SJI International. While the other schools are having their march holidays, SJI International's curriculum just resumed their lessons after mid term break.
We started our collection proper today at Toa Payoh East Community Club.
Many of our Lasallian Youths spend their Saturday mornings here mentoring children from the neighbourhood. They are children with special needs or are from broken families. We do our bit to be a friend and an older sibling to them. Currently, we have 40 children (mentees) and 43 volunteers (mentors). We spent this afternoon working with the social workers at Blk 31 in Toa Payoh to identify potential elderly who are in need.
We have broken them into three sub categories. You may view them here. |
